Rapper, screenwriter, and film producer, Devonta Ravizee, is set to shine a light on the city of Birmingham with his fresh, new show, 5 Lil’ Penguins. As stereotypes continue to tear down the Black community as a whole, Ravizee aims to shift outsiders’ perspectives.
The series, which stars Jarvis Armstrong as “Jayvion,” and LaShanna Tripp as his mother, will confront the high rate of death and incarceration rates of young, African-American men as opposed to the lower rates of young African-American men who are employed or enrolled in a college program.
The show will take the audience on a journey of five teens, each of who will be confronted with a range of unforgivable traps set before them that will prove challenging to survive. Real stories from the lives of real people from East Birmingham, Alabama, the characters that bring the 5 Lil’ Penguins storyline to life are full of heart and well-written by Ravizee, who believes that it is our proximity that determines what we believe to be “normal.”

“My grandmother was shot, and someone died during the filming of this show,” said Ravizee. “We talk about these types of things in the show – how this type of violence affects people on the ground in Birmingham.
Sometimes, when you hear the story on the news, you see it, but you’re not attached to it. We’re speaking from the perspectives of people attached to those stories. They are real crimes, real things that have happened.”
Everyone in communities in and around Birmingham is encouraged to attend this monumental affair. It is certainly one that shouldn’t be missed. To RSVP, email 5lilpenguins@gmail.com, and arrive dressed to impress.
